Students and Politics
People are divided on the
question whether students should take part in politics or not. Some people
think that students must take part in politics. But there are others who are
opposed to it. During the days of the freedom movement students took part in the
struggle. Their role in the national movement was very useful. But now things
have changed. The relation of students with politics must
be considered in the
light of modern conditions.
It
is said that politics is the field for those people who have no principle in life.
The study of politics corrupts the student’s mind. it develops in him a love of
worldly power and values. Thus a student loses his touch with the higher and
nobler ideals of life. By taking an active part in politics he neglects his
studies. So it is said that a student should have no concern with
politics of
the country.
On the contrary, it is said that
politics is one of the gifs of human knowledge. It is an important part of culture
and education. To cut the students off from this now force in education is not
proper. So people who hold this kind of view feel that a student must need
political knowledge and training.
There is yet another group of people
who feel that students should be allowed to study politics of the country.
Politics should not be dark about the political life of the country. Political
education should be given to a student through lectures and debates. Political
knowledge is good for them but not political agitation.
All these views have some merits and
they cannot be rejected completely. A student should have a sound political
education. He must get a good knowledge of all the leading political questions
of his country. He must be free to discuss and express his views on political
matters. So a student should be allowed to study the political problems of the
world. But he should not be allowed to take part in active politics. It may
affect his studies at school or college.
