Bharat Ratna: India's Highest Civilian Award Recognizing Excellence

Bharat Ratna: India's Highest Civilian Award Recognizing Excellence

The Bharat Ratna is India's highest civilian award, conferred in recognition of exceptional service or performance of the highest order, without distinction of race, occupation, position, or sex. Instituted on January 2, 1954, the Bharat Ratna holds significant prestige and honor in the Indian national honors system. Translated to English, Bharat Ratna means "Jewel of India," symbolizing the nation's highest admiration for individuals who have made extraordinary contributions in various fields.

Over the years, the Bharat Ratna has been awarded to luminaries from diverse domains including politics, literature, science, arts, and social services. The selection process involves careful consideration by a committee comprising the Prime Minister of India, the Chief Justice of India, and the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha (the lower house of the Parliament of India). The recommendations are then forwarded to the President of India for final approval.

The award, originally restricted to Indian citizens, was later amended to include non-resident Indians (NRIs) and foreigners who made outstanding contributions to India. However, the government discontinued the practice of awarding Bharat Ratna to non-citizens in 2011.
